London Tube had a “Funniest Avatar” event last Thursday, but some people got a little carried away with being monsters! DJ BlackBonez (below) bore a striking ressemblance to a real-life monster who was said to stalk the streets of Victorian London. Sightings of “Spring Heeled Jack” took place from 1837 onwards . It was said at the time that “Servant girls about Kensington.. tell dreadful stories of this ghost or devil”.Well London Tube is in the Mayfair sim, which joins on to the Kensington sim in Second Life- is this coincidence or something more sinister?(lol)
Henry Mayhew commented that the character had even made it into some Punch and Judy shows as the myth spread around Victorian society. A line from one such show quoted by Henry was “This here is Satan,-we might say the devil, but that ain’t right, and gennelfolks don’t like such words. He is now commonly called ‘Spring-heeled Jack;’ ” However, despite being made light of by some, there was a very real fear there, and reports of attacks on women for many decades afterwards. It seemed that the elusive Jack went on a country- wide journey, too, as there were many sightings all over the UK until his mysterious disappearance in 1904.
It is now generally believed that many of the sightings of the beast of “a most hideous and frightful appearance” were due to mass hysteria, but there is another theory. The Third Marquis of Waterford (right) was suggested as a possible suspect , and according to Wikipedia he “was frequently in the news in the late 1830s for drunken brawling, brutal jokes and vandalism, and was said to do anything for a bet; his irregular behaviour and his contempt for women earned him the title “The Mad Marquis” ” .
However there have been some sightings in the late twentieth century, which might indicate the return of the spooky character. I have a theory about any Second Life London viewings of him, though. Does the picture above left not look remarkably like a mixture between our very own Chubby`s Manager Roach Draconia (below, left) and Estate Manager Jason Keegan (seen below right dancing with his lovely wife Destiny)?[plain]I think there may be a secret love child in our midst! [/plain]
Mandrill Monkey Moon (above, right) was the host for the event. Ooh another M!
Todays blog is brought to you by the letter M everybody- to coin a phrase from Sesame Street!
A monkey was also seen hanging around Hyde Park`s Welcome Hub on Thursday, too, along with his mermaid mum!
I had a pleasant game of SLictionary with him. And yes of course monkeys can draw!
There were some bizarre avatars at the event, including a strange fuzzy yellow ball (above)!
DJ BlackBonez and his wife Wolf Moon seemed to be holding a competiton amongst themselves in the final half an hour, as they both put on more and more obscure avatars!
I hereby declare a draw, and award the prizes to both Wolf (above) and DJ BlackBonez (below).
