Media release – London 2012 Local Leader celebration in Virtual London
Join Virtual London in celebrating London 2012 Olympics
Virtual London is holding a celebration of the games in Second Life as a London 2012 Local Leader.
Last November LOCOG launched a grassroots programme inviting the UK’s Local Leaders to step forward and start planning local celebrations to celebrate the spirit of the Games. Today there are thousands (over 12,000) of London 2012 Local Leaders across the country Lining the Streets for the Olympic Torch Relay. Specifically in Virtual London we have fantastic examples of friends, family and communities coming together.
The online community in London in Second Life is committed to celebrating this joyous occasion in its own typical style – online.
Online celebrations in this 3D world community will use ideas from the Local Leader suggestions and apply them to a virtual world. We are holding competitions, sports quizzes, street parties, virtual sporting events and will be lining the streets of virtual London with parties.
Debs Butler says “As a leader of this community of over 30,000 members since 2006, I have been inspired to see their enthusiasm for all things ‘London’. The London 2012 Games are an exciting opportunity to enjoy an international celebration within this community, yet as London is the host nation and we are based in London, it’s also way to celebrate the achievements of our own home town of London.”

Seb Coe, Chair, London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games said: “We are proud that the power of the Games is inspiring communities to get together and celebrate the Games. The Games can be celebrated on your doorstep, and its people like Virtual London are making this happen across the UK. I congratulate everyone involved in the Line the Streets project for bringing the spirit of the Games to life in Kensington and Second Life and wish you every success with your event.”
London 2012 organisers are encouraging anyone who is looking to celebrate the London 2012 Games to sign up to be a Local Leader.
Whether they invite three friends or their whole community, London 2012 will provide them with the tools to make their celebration one to remember.
For people who want to be involved they just need to pick an occasion and get planning. The Local Leaders website, www.london2012.com/localleaders, has ideas, tools and tips to get people started planning an event.
Ideas put forward from communities across the UK include Line the Streets for the Olympic Torch Relay, Garden for the Games, hosting a sports quiz, party at home by throwing an Opening Night In and Super Saturday, the big medal-winning weekend during the Games.
Local Leaders can upload their celebrations to the London 2012 Join In listings, so they can be viewed alongside the Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebrations and other London 2012 events.
