We were treated to a wonderful seasonal treat last night in the London Sims – at St Mary Abbots Church in Kensington. Church Leader Pilgrim (aka Scrooge) read aloud the abridged version of “A Christmas Carol”, which was adapted from the original by Dickens himself for the purpose of public readings such as ours. The audience – although fairly small- were absolutely spellbound for the hour and a half event.
Pilgrim definitely has a talent there- and I, for one, will be pushing to make story-telling a weekly event in London.
What do you think. Please leave a comment. Would you come?
Wikipedia describes Dicken`s novel as “playing a major role” in reviving the modern Christmas festival. They say “Dickens sought to construct Christmas as a family-centered festival of generosity, in contrast to the community-based and church-centered observations, the observance of which had dwindled during the late 18th century and early 19th century. Superimposing his secular vision of the holiday, Dickens influenced many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today in Western culture, such as family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games, and a festive generosity of spirit.”
Debs Regent, Owner and Manager of the London Sims, was looking totally angelic, and seemed enraptured by Pilgrim`s recital. Luckily,Scrooge, it seemed was not put of by the lure of a sexy lady at the event.
What happened to Victorian outfits everyone? Lol – never mind, at least you all came and enjoyed it. There were cheers at the end when Scrooge finally decided to celebrate Christmas heartily!

And there is the promise of more similar events this season. For instance Pilgrim is going to do a Nativity service – along with some reading aloud, on Christmas Eve at Midday (Second Life Time). Make sure you all make it, as it`s the perfect way to get into the spirit for the big day. You could just come along and listen while you are wrapping last minute presents, after getting those over-excited kids to bed. Or let your kids stay up and listen. Pilgrim`s soothing tones will lure them off to a sleep filled with wonder at their favourite season.
As for Scrooge, he seemed to have turned over new leaf by the end of last night.
He even put in an appearance at Chubby Checkers later on, where he took his new found love of merry-making to extremes. He played the double bass to DJ Madhatter`s fifties and sixties tunes- and then turned into a real animal on the drum-kit! You go Scrooge – enjoy yourself in the London Sims!
Don`t forget tonight (23rd Dec) there will be a four-hour mammoth Christmas party at Chubby Checkers. Things kick off at Midday (Second Life Time), which is 8pm for us Brits. There will be two 1000L contests, too, for the best Christmas outfit. Come along and let your hair down at Chubby Checkers!
