Time Zone Countdown Starts Here
As the countdown approaches for the 2015 New Year, we’re looking at celebrating for the whole time in Second Life London. That’s a whole 26 hours long. On the planet, London will be the first place to celebrate the New Year. London, Christmas Island that is, in the Pacific Ocean.
There’s every reason for us to start our celebrations at the same time as them, after all we’re all Londoners even if some of us are virtual. In Second Life we’re the virtual Londoners and take the opportunity to check out the London that sets the New Year’s ball in motion for the Time Zone Countdown.
If we start with the first place to have New Year and go throughout the whole world, every hour on the hour, ‘someone’ will be having a New Year’s celebration party! Let’s find out where they are so we can join them all!
Londoners First In Line for 2015 New Year!
So who’s up first? In Universal Time (UTC – which happens to be UK time too), a group of islands called Kiribati occupy the world’s earliest time zone. Kiribati used to be called Christmas Island and its current name still means Christmas Island but in the local dialect.
Just over 100,000 people live there. These will be the first people in the world to experience 2015.
Of course ‘London’ is the main village and port facility on Christmas Island. Which means that the 1,829 people living in London will be the first people to welcome the New Year of 2015.
Kiribati is 14 hours ahead of our UK time (UTC). So when it’s 12 midnight New Year in Christmas Island, it’ll be 10am in the UK. It’ll be an early 2am in San Francisco where Linden Lab is based and where SLT is calculated from. Their Time Zone Countdown still has another 22 hours to go.
But poor old Hawaii is even another 3 hours behind that and for Hawaii, when it’s New Year in Kiribati, it’s still only 11pm on the 30th December and not even New Year’s Eve! They’ve got a LOT of catching up to do there, having to wait another 25 hours for their turn to celebrate.
The US is the last place to celebrate the New Year on this planet. The final time zone is 12 hours behind Universal time and contains Baker Island and Howland Island. Luckily no one lives there because both islands are uninhabited.
The start of 2015 in London on Kiribati, begins the Time Zone Countdown through all time zones until we reach Universal zero time at London UK and welcome our own New Year of 2015 into our lives!
